SUNtoy / Privacy
Privacy, in plain daylight.
Updated 26 October 2026
SUNtoy has no account system, advertising, analytics SDK or developer-operated location server. Some optional features contact service providers. Here is what happens when you use them.
What stays on your device
Preferences, saved places, selected dates, alert settings and widget snapshots are stored locally in app storage or the app's shared App Group. Solar and lunar calculations run on the device. SUNtoy does not provide cloud synchronization.
Location and Apple services
With permission, location and heading help calculate your local sky. You can choose a place manually instead. Apple Maps, place search, geocoding and optional sky geotracking use Apple's services and may send the selected area, search terms or localization information to Apple. Apple Weather requests use the selected coordinate rounded to two decimal places. Weather is cached in memory for up to 30 minutes. These services are governed by Apple's privacy policy.
Optional nearby building requests
Only when you choose to load nearby buildings, SUNtoy sends the full selected latitude and longitude to the public Overpass service at overpass-api.de to request OpenStreetMap footprints within 400 metres. This may be your current location or a manually selected place. The provider receives your IP address and request information and documents request logging. SUNtoy cannot delete or control provider logs. Building results are cached in memory for up to one hour. Skip this feature if you do not want to send that selected coordinate.
Camera, motion and photos
Camera and motion permissions support the sky overlay. SUNtoy has no developer-operated camera upload service. Optional precision alignment relies on Apple's geotracking services. When you choose to save a sky capture, SUNtoy requests permission to add the image to Photos. Sharing a capture or CSV sends it only to the destination you choose; that destination's privacy rules apply.
Alerts, widgets and Shortcuts
Solar reminders are local system notifications. Widgets read a local shared snapshot. Siri and Shortcuts use Apple's system integrations and the places you select. Live Activities display a countdown through the operating system; SUNtoy does not operate a push notification server.
Retention and your controls
You can change permissions in system settings and remove saved places or disable alerts in the app. Removing the app removes its local app data subject to operating-system backup and retention behavior. Images saved to Photos and files you export remain until you delete them. Third-party service logs follow each provider's retention policy.
This website
This site has no analytics scripts, advertising, tracking cookies, account forms or embedded third-party media. Cloudflare hosts the site and may process standard connection information, such as IP addresses and request logs, to deliver and secure it. External links use the destination's own privacy policy.
Support and policy changes
Support is provided through public GitHub issues. Share app version, device type and reproduction steps; do not post precise locations, private images, account information or other sensitive data. GitHub processes information you choose to post. For a general privacy question, use support without including personal data. Material policy updates will be reflected on this page.
